Maria Raducanu Quintet
Romanian singer Maria Răducanu brings free-spirited interpretations to songs from around the world.
A rebel soul, Maria Răducanu grew up listening to Billie Holiday, Betty Carter and Nat King Cole, wishing that someday she would sing Coltrane's compositions with Keith Jarrett's imagination and expressiveness. Her interpretation of heart-stoppingly beautiful Romanian songs such as the classic Foaie Verde confirm her as a modern-day Maria Tănase, and she adds fado and Balkan folklore, lullabies and Russian romances, Sephardic standards, tangos and bossa, flowing together into an all-encompassing, utterly-captivating sound-world.
Released on John Zorn's Tzadik label, Maria and her international quintet are in London as part of Europalia Arts Festival Romania.
“one of the most distinctive voices in the world… pure, deeply emotional and goes straight to the heart.” John Zorn
